Reaching for the Heart in Racial Justice Work (3 Part Series Beginning at the Top of Each Hour)
Part 1: Seeing Blackness

In this workshop Participants will be invited to dive deep in an intimate and thoughtful learning environment. Much of the format of the workshop will come in the form of questioning. You will be encouraged to look within from an honest and vulnerable place. Questions will be asked that will push us towards being close to and seeing African heritage people without the oppressive force of racism. This workshop aims to re-frame how white people look at African heritage people and help white and non-black people fight for their relationship with blackness.

Part 2: Touching Blackness

Touching Blackness is about hearing the stories of Black Bodies, feeling the story in our skin, in our voices, and in our tears. The strategies you use to hold and hear African heritage stories will be examined. You are invited to this Deep Dive to hold witness to the power of reaching for others. It is also about you. What experiences around touch do you bring to the room? Of black bodies? Of messing up or feeling awkward? The purpose of this workshop is to start a conversation that continues for a lifetime. We invite you to begin here. At the center of every Workshop is human connection. We invite closeness and intimacy in all of the workshop experiences. Having smaller groups than a typical workshop allows us to slow down how we see, hear, and reach for each other. These spaces invite emotions and further curiosity to come up in the process of reaching for each other’s hearts and minds.

Part 3: Reaching for Blackness

As white folks reach for African Heritage folks in social justice work, part of that relationship is re-evaluating how we give correction as white people. Every correction has an impact, and it’s a necessary part of reaching for blackness. In this deep dive, we are going to investigate what comes up in ourselves, the potential impact, and the offer care for ourselves and for them. There are three categories we will discuss. Critique around money and the professional environment, the body, and sexuality.

Fate of the Biosphere: Changing Planet
One of the largest uncertainties in projections of future climate change is the role of terrestrial ecosystems in contributing to or mediating the rise in atmospheric CO2. At NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), we are working on understanding these effects and impacts through satellite remote sensing and supercomputer modeling. In this talk, Dr. Fisher will give an overview of the latest remote sensing datasets and model developments from JPL, and discuss new insights into the behavior and understanding of terrestrial ecosystems in a changing climate.

Evening Keynote: At the Edges of People, Places and Programs: Restorative Design
In Permaculture we have a principle that says "use edges and value the marginal." We also know that there is tremendous threat at the edges as it is a point where to different eco-systems meet to form the Ecotone or transition point! However, we also know that if we follow nature's principle of design that magic can be created at the edges. We will explore, "how do we value the difference while creating unity." As Mama Earth heats up it is imperative for the human species to become a better companion crop. It is my intention to provide design tools and principles to inoculate human organisms in becoming better companion crops, and eco-friendly designers for/to Mama Earth.

How to Use Your Voice in the Art of Resistance
This uplifting and throat chakra-shocking workshop invites participants put their voices
where their heart is, so as to better express themselves, and affect the world around us
with that expression. Led by poet, teacher, facilitator, and donut-connoisseur, KJ Ink,
willing participants will spend the hour opening their minds to the power of language and
re-experiencing the power of it first hand, before equipping themselves with helpful reminders and tricks that should keep them afloat as they then wade into the river of their own creativity. Yay! Once feet, and perhaps knees, and maybe even the small of someone’s back has gotten wet with all that wading, the group will reconvene for a chance to share and reflect. Prepare to take notes. Be prepared to write. Novice and advanced writers welcome.
Introverted and extroverted speakers welcome. No one will be forced to share or do anything they don’t want to do. So long as you care deeply about something going on in
this world (other than yourself and those around you, of course), you should feel right at home in this creative exploration of self-expression.
